Adventures in the Past: A Reminiscent Tour
Before long, at a town not too far away, there was a magnificent location called “Old School.” For young explorers like myself, it contained riches beyond our wildest dreams, even if it wasn’t a fortress or a hidden refuge.
The Old School was a mystical place where thick, bulky volumes held old wisdom. No, actual paper and ink, not the ones with glowing displays and beeping buttons! There, people’s imaginations ran wild and the corridors reverberated with laughter.
The aroma of Old School would be the first thing to catch your attention. Oh, how wonderful it smells—a blend of paper, ink, and just a hint of what may have been lunch decades ago. It was a scent that filled you with a sense of grandeur and tickled your nostrils.
We had a wise old wizard at Old School named the Librarian. She was a severe yet kind woman who looked after the old books’ secrets. Her hair was usually pulled back into a tight bun, as if she was trying to hold in her knowledge. Her spectacles rested on the point of her nose.
You required a Library Card, a mystical relic, to explore Old School’s treasures. This card served as your passport to distant places and fantastical worlds, your ticket to an exciting new journey. There was a plastic fragment that had more power than a sword or wand.
Old School’s shelves were stacked high like rising mountains, with books of all sizes and kinds. While some were dirty and obese, others were slender and radiant. Every one of them concealed a unique story, just waiting to be discovered by an inquisitive reader.
i used to love going on the Dewey Decimal Hunt in Old School. It resembled a treasure hunt, except the markers were integers and decimals rather than Xs. Equipped with my reliable Library Card, I would set out on a mission to discover the hidden riches, cracking mysterious codes as I went.
But the beautiful world of Pencil and Paper was the finest part of Old School. We had no virtual keyboards or computer displays in this dimension. Rather of that, we had pencils that danced across paper, leaving behind trails of doodling and phrases. Erasers were our devoted companions, and errors were encouraged there.
But take caution—in Old School, there were beings referred to as Spelling Bees. These cunning insects liked to lurk in sentence corners, where they would wait to attack unwary words. They tested us with their difficult spells, but we always prevailed because we had a strong will and a reliable dictionary.
The Encyclopaedia was another magical artefact from Old School. It was an assemblage of enormous volumes containing the wisdom of the centuries. When you opened one, you were taken to other places and educated about strange vegetation, unusual creatures, and old civilizations. It was like having a passport that allowed you to travel the whole globe within a book.
Not to be overlooked is the fabled Recess Yard, a veritable kingdom with tonnes of games, swings and slides. There, disputes were resolved over games of tag and hopscotch, friendships were formed, and alliances were formed. Time appeared to stand still in the Recess Yard, a haven of laughter and limitless vitality.
When the sun descended behind Old School and golden rays streamed through the windows, we realised it was time to say goodbye to this magical place. We would go with our hearts full of adventure and our brains full of fresh knowledge, knowing that Old School would always be there to greet us back.
